Lily is our newest family member. I have always admired Standard Poodles for their elegance and regal carriage and hoped to one day have one of my own. When I came across Lily she was 5 months old and had been evacuated from her breeder's kennel in Oklahoma to another kennel in Missouri as a small puppy along with several of her litter mates. I was a little unsure about getting an older puppy, especially of a bigger breed that may not have been as socialized as most puppies by that age, and was concerned about possible behavior issues might create problems blending into our home with our two Toy Poodles, Vinnie and Layla, and my 18 month old granddaughter. When I met Lily she was somewhat timid and had not been groomed but I knew as soon as I put my hands on her and looked into her soft, intelligent eyes that she was a beautiful dog. In the two months I have had her she
has gone from a timid puppy that had to be picked up (she weighs 40
lbs) and put into the car, to a puppy that willingly jumps into the
seat and sits beside me while I drive, even staying put until I tell
her she can jump out. Her first experience on a leash was a Saturday
morning that I took her into town to the local Farmer' Market and together
we walked my granddaughter in her stroller around the venders and along
the sidewalks. When I stopped to talk she sat quietly at my feet and
never pulled or barked and made quite an impression on the passers by
as well as myself. She is very playful but also very soft and mellow.
Living out in the country she has free range of our yard and the surrounding
forest and although she is tempted at times to investigate farther than
I want her to go, she is better than most puppies her age to come back
to me on command. Being a horseback rider, I cannot help comparing the
feel of her on the leash to the feel of a loose-gaited horse that is
very responsive to the bit. Someone told me the difference in a Toy
poodle and a Standard poodle was that a Toy will walk behind you and
a Standard walks beside you and it is true. I am thrilled with my decision
in getting Lily and I look forward to our years together. When the time
is right, Lily and I hope to offer puppies that will provide the same
wonderful companionship. Statistics: AKC #
